This paper presents the design and implementation of a fuzzy logic controller @?LC) for a superconducting generator (SCG) operating in a multi-machine power system. The controller is designed and tested in a multi-machine power system which includes conventional generators. The conventional generators are of different types and ratings. Conventional generators are equrpped with their excitation and conventional control systems. To assess the new control strategy a fairly detailed nonlinear model is used. A comprehensrve assessment of the proposed FLC is presented and the simulation results are obtained in comparison with others obtained with controllers designed based on conventional techniques. The results illustrate significant improvements in performance when RC is used. This is obtained at different operating conditions and when the system is subjected to a variety of disturbances and changes in system configuration.

In this paper, a novel intermediate lime regulator suitable for use as a current source converter is proposed. The operation principle of this converter is mainIy based on switched series inductor and i switched shunt capacitor. Thus, two semiconductor devices only are used for single-phase systems I i and six semiconductor devices for three-phase systems. This reduces switching losses and increases the effciency compared to !hat of previous topologies. The control strategy is built via i ! pulse width modulation technique accompanied by the control method used. In this study, two I different control methods, conventional PI and fuzzy logic, are tested and compared to select the i , preferable one. The simulation results of the proposed converter are presented based on i MATLABISIMULINK tools. Also, the results of the three-phase arrangement are shown with the simulated waveforms. In order to validate the converter operation, a laboratory prototype based on TMS320C31 digital signal processor has been designed and constructed. Experimental results for I dflerent cases are presented

This paper presents a multizonal integral proportional (IP) speed controller for a closed loop speed . . controller of a separately excited .dc motor. The motor is fed from a dc power supply and $epic : converter. Tbis converter offers boih step-up and step-down characteristics of the 'motor terminal voltage. Ah@ performance is achieved with a simple contml circuit having only one switch , (MOSFET) for the proposed system. The output voltage and current are smooth and free of ripples. The converter operates in both open and closed loop speed control. A multizonal IP speed controller is used to overcome the possibility of change in the system parameters. The proposed modeling, and simulation of the system are performed using differential equations which describe the systembehaviour ih the different operating conditions. The rnn up, transient and steady state are presented. Speed control using.multiZona1 IP speed controller is given to satisfy the best required response for the load disturbances. Also, the motor speed can follow the desired reference speed smoothly in the Werent operating zones, The experimental results have ensured the proposed controller robustness, simple, and powerful control application capabilities. The experimental and simulation results of the converter for both open and closed loop speed control system are verified and a good correlation between them was found

In this paper, a novel design method for optimal tuning of brushless exciter parameters using ... particle harm optiniitation algorithm is presented. The problem of simultaneous and coordinated tuning of brushless exciter and lead-lag power system stabilizer parameters of a single infinite bus power system is considered. This problem is formulated as an optimization problem, which is solved using particle swarm optimization technique. Also in this paper, the optimal Wg of a fuzzp logic power system stabilize1 using particle swami optimization method is canied out. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed particle swarm optimization-based leadlag power system stabilizer and p&cle swarm optimization-based fuzzy logic power system stabilizer to damp the oscillation of multi machine system and work effectively under variable loading and faukconditions.

This paper presents the design and application of a combined fuzzy logic (FL) controller and a thyristor controlled static reactive power compensator (TCSR) to enhance the performance of a multi-machine power system. This is a 12-bus system which includes superconducting generator (SCG) and three conventional machines of different types and ratmgs. The FL controller is designed and implemented in the governor control loop of the SCG. While, conventional generators are equipped with different excitation systems and then conventional controllers. Also, the TCSR compensator is designed and included at different locations due to its increasing importance in suppressing power system oscillations ahd improving system damping. A fairly detailed Non-linear model of the whole system is built and computer simulations are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the combined conml scheme in improving the static and dynamic performance of the power system under different disturbances and over a wide range of operating conditions. A com~arison is made between these results to select the most effective location of the TCSR. The mlt's are of great interest tp power system utilities, forming a gaint for future applications.

This paper describes a proposed procedure to calculate the stability, against laten1 movement, of submarine pipelines resting on the seabed and exposed to wave or combined wave and current loadings. The procedure provides an estimate of the expected pipe embedment created by wave induced oscillatory pipe motions. Based on this expected pipe embedment into the soil, realistic hydrodynamic and soil force formnlatio~s''~ are used to check pipe stability for loadings expected during the design event.

Thin ferrocement plates reinforced with various types of expanded steel meshes were developed mth high strength, crack resistance, high ductihly and energy absorption properties whlch might be useful for dynamic applications. Five series of plates were casted and tested under four different loading condibons. The dynamic responses such as: frequency, mode shape and damping factor were extensively investigated using FFT analyw. The experimental analysis and finite element technique were utilized to study the effect of network configurations and boundruy fixations on dynamic characteristics. In additioq the investigated composite plates were tested in the high frequency range (up to120 kHA .--- , throueh ultrasonic attenuation technique. For this purpose, an experimental setup was -- c. designed and constructed to measure dynahc elastic modulus, phase velocity and damping attenuation. The effect of mesh-layer debonding on the dynamic characteristics (natural frequency and damping ratio) was investigated. Damage was detected using vibration measurements and identified by comparing signals in higher frequency ranges before and after damage.

the use of p&o& matrices to enable damage tolerance in ceramic composites has emerged as a . . new ljaradigm in high performance materials. This paradigm obviates the need for fiber coatings for the puipose of crack deflection, thereby providing opportunities for lower cost MFG relative to that of conventional coated-fiber systems. Thus, the CISiC-material shows a fiber-dominated behavior due to high fiber strength and matrix porosity. The characteristics and mechanical properties of this CISiC are highlighted. The discussion deals with the particular mechanical chgacteristics of porous-matrix materials relating to similar materials investigated hitherto.

Many SurveyinglGeomatics related organizations are in the process of conslructing huge highresolution imagery databases which contain digid color images covering different areas of their interest. The sues of such image databases are very large A typical problem of such database projects IS the huge size of the imageq for storage andlor distribution. With the development of remote sensing technology, large swath width along with multi-wavebands make data size to mcrease greatly. Therefore, image compression becomes one of the most essential tasks in dealing with such imagery. Several techniques exist on the market to compress such imagery The compression market is now overwhelmed by Standard & non-standard compression tools and software. Each vendor pretends to have the most reliable compression techniques. This paper is devoted to examine (subjectively and objectively) the effect of using the new JPEG2000 standard compression algorithm Joint Photographic Experts Group- in the market in dealing with high resolution spatial imagery & to recommend the optimum compression ratio to be used when using PEG2000 standard in compressing high resolution imagery. The testing procedure cons~dered the spectral as well as the spatial effect of the new market standard on the image pixels and to recommend the optimum compression ratio for such cases.

The main loads acting on any bdding ate the vertical and the lateral loads. Lateral loads are induced mainly from the wind and the earthquakes and should be considered in the design of reinforced concrete structures, especially for high-rise buildings. Great modifications were introduced to the previous Egyptian code of practice for calculating loads and forces in structural and building works 1993, ECOP-93. The new Egyptian code ECOP-201, 2003 introduced the method of spectrum analysis for calculating seismic loads instead of the previous simplified method. In many cases effects of earthquakes are found to be dominant and more critical than wind effects. This depends on sonie factors defined by the codes. In this research the latest code is reviewed for wind and earthquake analysis and discussed to show all factors affecting the design. A computer program is developed to analyze the structural buildings subjected to wind pressure and the equivalent loads of earthquakes defined by the two Egyptian codes. Numerical examples are solved, analyzed discussed and compared for different factors. The main conclusions are summarized

~ransv~&e openings are sometimes very essential for accommodating utility services in reinforced . . wncrete structures. Most current codes and specifications have no provisions for specific design of reinforced concrete beanis with openings andmbjected to torsion. The object of this research is to develop a nonlinear 3-D finite elements constitutive model for RC. beams with openings ~bjected to torsion by simulate the experimental behavior. A computer program based on finite element method is developed to include the nonlinear material properties of both concreteand steel feinforcement. The output results of the F.E. program are compared and ' verified with the experimental results done by other researchers. The effect of some important parameters such as 'tension stiffening, shear retention paranieters, compressive suength of ' concrete, as well as the opening dimensions, and their locations are studied and investigated.
