This paper introduces the impact of installing FACTS devices on protection systems. STATCOM is used to indicate its impact on distance relay. To check the feasibility installing of STATCOM into power system for improving the distance relay performance, the zones are suggested (Z1, Z2 and Z3) and have been calculated in order to improve the performance of distance relay protection and to prevent circuit breaker disturbance tripping. The simulation results are carried out in MATLAB software. The results reveal that the apparent impedance doesn’t change when the distance relay is tested without STATCOM device under different locations of faults. After installing STATCOM in transmission line, the apparent impedance doesn’t change and it equals the actual impedance in spite of compensation modes of STATCOM

This paper deals with the importance of load frequency control (LFC) for single and interconnected power system. It is important to keep the frequency of the system and the inter area tie power stable. The goal of LFC is to maintain the frequency, the desired power output and to control the change in tie line power between control areas in an interconnected power system. Two different techniques have been implemented in this paper which are model predictive controller MPC and conventional proportional plus integral controller PI for LFC of single area power system as well as two area system. To investigate the powerful and robustness of model predictive control (MPC) technique for LFC problems in electric power system, time simulations is performed. The obtained results indicate that the MPC provide better damping to the single area system as well as two-area system in case of load disturbance compared with conventional PI controller. The studied single-area and two-area systems are modelled and simulated using Simulink/Matlab software.

this paper deals with the effect of FACTS devices such as Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) and Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) on stability of the system connected to wind turbine under normal and fault conditions. Simulink models are developed for 5 bus system with wind turbine with and without FACTS devices. Digital simulation using MATLAB/SIMULINK is done with these models and the results are presented. The effect of UPFC and STATCOM on real power, reactive power and the voltage is also presented.

The utilization of non-linear loads has become major concern especially in an industrial power system. The operation of these loads creates harmonics. If the harmonic occurs at the same frequency when the power system is at resonance, it could result in amplification of the harmonic distortion (harmonic resonance). The installation of filters is important to avoid permanent damage to the electrical equipment. This paper presents a connection of the hybrid active filter in series with the passive filter without transformer to damp the harmonic resonance as well as to mitigate the harmonic voltages and currents. Also, address the frequency analysis method to observe the effect of parallel and series resonant in power system. The studied system is modelled and simulated using MATLAB/Simulink software.

In this research, the influence of the drilling process parameters; three cutters (end mill) of different diameters, three of cutting speeds and five of feed rates on the process responses, i.e. the surface roughness ( ) and the delamination factor ( ) of the drilled hole are studied. The two types of the used composites are GFRP and AL/SiCp. From the analysis of the results, the feed rate and the cutter diameter are had a large effect on surface roughness and delamination factor, while both of them are increased with the increase of cutter diameter and the used feed rates. The results of surface roughness and the delamination factor when drilling GFRP composite are bigger than that values of AL/SiCp composite at all used cutters, cutting speeds and all used feed rates. Also, from the results, using of cutting speed (2500 rpm), end mill of the small diameter ϕ 8mm and low feed rate (10mm/min) are suitable for drilling GFRP and AL/SiCp to get a better surface roughness of the resulted.

Optimization of the drilling Parameters for GFRP Composite using Taguchi Technique

Lecture, Production engineering & Mech. Design Dept., Faculty of Engineering, Menoufiya University, Egypt
The surface roughness and the delamination are important difficulties in any drilling operation of (GFRP) composite materials. Both two elements cause structural integrity reduction and poor assembly as well as the potential for long-term performance deterioration. In this research, the optimization of drilling parameters using Taguchi technique, to obtain minimum both surface roughness (Ra) and the delamination factor (df). In addition, ANOVA uses to analyze the data obtained from the experiments and determine the optimal parameters in the drilling of GFRP composite materials. The results revealed that the delamination factor (df) increases with the increase of drilling speed (2250rpm-2750rpm) and increases with the increase of the feed rate (100mm/min to 125mm/min). Increasing the drilling speed and reducing feed rate can reduce the delamination factor (df) and the use of high feed rate and high spindle speed can be increasing the delamination factor (df) within the limits of specified speed and feed rates. The feed rate is the more influential factor on delamination than the other parameters. The results for very low feed rate i.e. 25mm/min and high drilling speed 2750 rpm show a clear decrease in surface roughness (Ra). Feed rate and drilling speed are the more influential factors on surface roughness (Ra) than the other parameters.

In aerospace applications research efforts are focusing on the design of advanced composite materials reinforced with nano fillers. Such advanced materials combine weight saving with multifunctional properties, including mechanical. In the present investigation, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) nanoparticles were dispersed individually by different size percentages into epoxy-based polymeric nano composites. MWCNTs of 20 and 30 nm inner and outer diameters were reinforced with contents of 0.3, 0.6,and 0.9 % into epoxy matrix. Mechanical properties of Epoxy/MWCNTs such as tensile strength, strain at break, impact energy, and Vickers micro hardness .The design was done using design of experiments (DOE) using mixed full .The mechanical results revealed declining in tensile strength, strain at break and impact energy. While the micro hardness values enhanced with addition of nano fillers into the epoxy matrix. Frequency response and shock absorption ratios have been severely affected by increasing ratios of nanometer materials. Where the results of mechanical tests showed a decrease in the rate of shock absorption. It is noticeable that the damping factor follows the same trend as the mechanical properties of epoxy nanoparticles.
