A Study of Heat Recovery in Air Conditioning Using Heat Pipes Heat Exchanger

Abstract

Heat pipes heat exchanger (HPHE) is a compact high effectiveness heat exchanger. It is used to transfer large amounts of heat with relatively small area. In this work, a study of using this type of heat exchanger to save energy has been conducted. In air conditioning, totally fresh air may be required in many applications, which in turn requires high cooling capacity. To overcome this, fresh air is cooled by exchanging heat with the exhaust air without mixing between them. The current study is an experimental study on a HPHE model that has 60 heat pipes of 9.52 mm diameter with two layers of 100 mesh wire screen as a wick material. The HPHE model is finned with 50 aluminum corrugated fins spaced at 4 mm at both of evaporator and condenser sections. R141b is used as the working fluid. The performance is studied at inlet fresh air temperatures Th,i = [36, 40, 44, 48, 52 ℃] at different cold air to fresh air mass flow rate ratios. The results showed high effectiveness of the HPHE up to 66%. Economic study on the model shows a payback period of 5.4 years on average.
