Abstract

In this paper, a performance evaluation of a transient-based fault management technique is introduced. This technique is based on capturing the traveling waves at different points in the distribution network. By analyzing these waves, the faulted zone is determined through a detailed comparison of the waves' amplitudes at specific points. Subsequently, the faulted branch is identified by applying two distinct criteria along with a comprehensive voting system. Finally, the faulted section is determined by the two-end traveling wave technique. This evaluation is accomplished by making a comparison study with a conventional fault management technique based on distributed sensors measure the phase current characteristics. This comparison includes some points, especially the existence of a distributed generator (DG) within the network. Both techniques are applied on IEEE 33 bus system which is simulated by the PSCAD program. The results obtained from these simulations confirm the good performance of the transient-based scheme, making it a reliable solution for implementation in modern distribution systems.
